  1. Well how about that. Who knew? (Everyone except me probably.) Those are some good changes they’ve made.

I love the penalty distance idea. Is that yours?

  2. You were ahead of your time here, since progress has been made on several of your suggestions since your 2018 post.

    1. You wanted more referees. Well, now they have a video assistant referee (VAR) to catch major offenses that happen behind the referee’s back, or correct bad decisions.

    2. More subs. They made this change in 2022. Now 5 subs are allowed, and even a 6th if a concussion occurs. BTW, when my dad was growing up, there were indeed no subs allowed. He still laments some cup final 70 years ago or whatever, when his favorite team had an injury in the opening minutes, had to play a man down the entire game, and lost.

    3. Penalties for flopping. Well, they don’t give away penalties, but they dole out yellow cards. However, unfortunately it’s still too rare for a flopper to get a yellow. Also, though, VAR has fixed some flops that used to be called penalties. Alas, despite improvements, flopping still occurs all too regularly.

    4. Decrease size of box. This has not happened. But the keeper cannot handle the ball if passed back to him via foot from a teammate. This was not the case when we were kids.

    5. Penalty distance. I agree with you here. Maybe they should have different penalty spots for different infractions. Like in football, where there are different penalties for offsides vs holding vs roughing the QB. If it’s a blatant handball stopping a goal or a rugby tackle on a breakaway, let them take a shot from the normal penalty spot. But if it’s a trip 20 yards from goal with 8 defenders between the offensive player and the goal, then give him a penalty shot from the top of the box, or 25 yards away, or whatever.
