The State of the Election (538.com)

According to the national polls this has been a close race, only slightly in Obama’s favor. You should be wondering how much the national poll matters. What does the situation look like if you go to each state and see where it’s electoral votes are polling and add it all up?

Ladies and Gentlemen, one of the best election sites out there, www.fivethirtyeight.com. You can look that up and play with all kinds of different possibilities to your hearts content. A dream tool for the amateur politnik.

Oh, by the way? Current projections are Obama 310, McCain 227. The race isn’t nearly as close as you think.

  1. Another site I’ve used in the past two election cycles was http://www.electoral-vote.com/. Not nearly as suave and sophisticated as Muttrox’s suggestion (wow, that’s a nice one! lol), but contains concise daily news, electoral projections (similar to Mutt’s with Obama 301, McCain 224, tie 13).
Anyway, just remember how easy it is to win (ahem) an election without winning the popular vote, (e.g. Bush 2000). It’s a silly statistic to pay attention to. It’s conceivable that McCain takes the traditional red states 65%-35%, and Obama squeaks out most of the big-electoral states and ends up winning in a electoral landslide, with only a small majority of the popular vote.
